The clasp is almost invisible in some situations, but in others, it is an important design element.
We now begin with the different types of clasps for bracelets and necklaces.
RING CLASP
The traditional clasps for chains and necklaces are ring clasps. In this technique, two rings, each opened at a very narrow point, are hung into each other in such a way that they cannot come apart on their own.
SPRING RING CLASP
Spring rings are the classic, simplest chain clasps. They are practical and affordable and are often used for lightweight pendant chains due to their low weight. It is a small ring where a piece can be moved with a hook, allowing the ring to open. A built-in spring ensures that the ring closes again when the hook is released. Sizes start at 5 mm up to 22 mm, a much heavier and ornate style. A larger clasp is therefore not only practical but also an additional design feature.
TOGGLE CLASP
This clasp consists of a ring on one side of the chain or bracelet and a T-shaped bar on the other side, which is turned to the side to bind the jewelry through the ring. Since the bar is longer than the ring diameter, this clasp holds the jewelry together. It is possible to make a toggle clasp very decorative.
MAGNETIC CLASP
The clasp holds the two ends of the jewelry together like a magnet, as the name suggests. There are magnets at both ends of the bracelet that find each other when the ends are brought together, making it very easy to wear.
Advantages: Quick and easy fastening and unfastening!
Note: A magnetic clasp that is not suitable for people with pacemakers.
LOBSTER CLASP
Lobster clasps or lobster claws are, along with spring rings, the most common jewelry clasps and owe their name to the obvious resemblance to lobster claws. They are stronger, heavier, and more expensive than spring rings, making them a good choice for higher-priced products. They are suitable for longer, heavier pendant and bracelet chains, where the weight of the chain or pendant balances the weight of the clasp, keeping it in place.
BAYONET CLASP
The plug-twist motion of the bayonet clasp combines high elegance with great security when wearing jewelry. The connection and fixing is done by a twist-lock movement. Lamps can also be attached using a bayonet lock. In this case, it is called a bayonet socket. The advantage of this connection: Even with larger vibrations, the bayonet lock cannot come loose, and jewelry remains secure.
Hook closures consist either of a hook and a round counterpart or of two identical hooks.
